Potassium is an electrolyte that’s important to optimizing brain function as outlined in Dr. Robert Melillo’s book “The Disconnected Kids The Nutrition Plan.” This series, “Nutrition for the Brain,” will explore the nutrients that are most important to brain development and childhood health.


Potassium helps carry oxygen to the brain and keeps the brain and nerves working at their best to allow for clarity of thought. It also helps carry impulses from the brain to the large muscles.


Some research suggests the potassium may help with the sensory overload that is common in autism due to the inability of the brain to properly process sensory input. In addition, reduction of stress has been reported.


Potassium is plentiful in the food supply of a well-balanced diet. It’s in all meats, fish, and chicken and in these foods:

  • Banana
  • Baked Potato (skin on)
  • Carrot Juice
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Dried Apricots
